Peter Marshall's Prayer Nov 24, 1947

Peter Marshall
Senate Chaplain 1947
"God of our father's and our God, give us the faith to believe in the ultimate triumph of righteousness, no matter how dark and uncertain of the skies of today.

We pray for the bifocals of faith-that see the despair and the need of the hour but also see, further on, the patience of our God working out his plan in the world he has made.

So help thy servants to interpret for our time the meaning of the motto inscribed on our coins. Make our faith honest by helping us this day to do one thing because thou hast said, "Do it," or to abstain because thou hast said, "Thou shalt not."

How can we say we believe in thee, or even want to believe in thee, when we do not anything thou dost tell us! May our faith be seen in our works. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen"

When reading this prayer today in a book titled "On this day in Christian History." I was struck with passion to share it. I know that this prayer is shared often during the lame duck season of the congress and senate. However, I feel that this year it is more fitting than ever.

The skies seem dark in the halls of the congress and senate. The uncertainty of the economy is ever before those who have been elected to steer this sinking vessel. But what they all need is the bifocals of faith to guide them to see the despair surrounding so many Americans who are hurting today.

I pray that their minds be guided by His discernment, that they receive wisdom from the Father of lights who gives it liberally to all who seek Him, last, may they receive grace and forgiveness from Him, for their pride and arrogance of not abstaining when they should have, and for not doing as what they have been elected to do.  So the motto on our currency reads "In God We Trust."

It seems so simple, but what stands in the way is the bifocals of faith. One lens has them leading us on a path they think is best. The other lens leads us on the path that our Father knows is best. If they would just turn to Him seek His face he would heal our land. So I pray for the bifocals of faith for our leaders that they would trust Him more and themsleves less. I ask you to pray too.

Amen...
